The word 'yoga' means 'union' - unite every part of ourselves - so we can feel inner peace. Celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Anniston, Meg Ryan, and Cameron Diaz swore with Yoga to help them focus, lose weight or stop smoking.
What
is your motivation to start a yoga class?
First of all, ask yourself why you are
interested in starting yoga classes. Do you want to reduce stress? Get hard and
super-fit? Remove your back pain or neck? Calm your mind? Contact with your
inner insight? Be honest with yourself, because these questions will help you
find the right style for your type.
Choose
the right yoga school
There are lots of yoga styles around, and
each has different benefits. Some (like Astanga Vinyasa Yoga) very physically demanding,
others are held in hot spaces (Bikram yoga), while some focus on softer therapy
movements (drum yoga) or meditation and songs (kundalini). Some generic hatha
yoga classes, which might be quite soft and can be accessed for most of the
fitness level. You can also search for a yoga studio for online yoga classes from various internet sources.
Get
to know about the teacher
Before you commit to the term yoga class,
set to meet Yoga teachers and discuss your needs. Ask questions too - Check
whether they qualify with yoga schools that are accredited with international
bodies such as the Alliance Yoga.
Check what their attitude is for salvation because many people are injured every year from stretching or tension when they
are not ready. Do your teacher offer modifications and contra-indications for
each posture? Is there an adequate relaxation period (Savasana) at the end of
the class?
Find
a location that is suitable for you
If you are going to the yoga class, then
select a realistic location. I have seen so many students attending classes
enthusiastically at the beginning of September, just to decide that it was too
far away when a cold and dark night arranged. Some people like traveling for
one hour to find the teacher they like, but for others, choosing classes in the
village hall they work better.
Get
the right equipment
For most classes, you will need a yoga mat
and comfortable clothes, and a bottle of water. Some dynamic classes need
towels (to clean all sweat!) While others encourage you to carry a blanket or
shawl for meditation. For your first class, you might not need to come out and
buy all the equipment - talk to your Yoga teacher and he will advise you what
is needed. Some teachers have backup mats to lend to new students - which can
help until you are committed.
Take
the time to practice at home
Even better than attending yoga classes
once a week experiencing ordinary home yoga exercises. In the yoga retreat I
taught in Wales, I always suggest finding a quiet place at home, and just do ten
minutes of yoga and meditation every day! There are many Yoga DVDs and books
around that can help with exercise in your home, or you can subscribe to online
yoga classes.
By doing ordinary yoga, you will feel
fitter, calmer, and more focused - and able to deal with every day emphasizing
much easier. I hope the best of luck in your yoga journey!
